A massive Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.

The top offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the company of a well-known sushi chain, which runs restaurants across the country and internationally.

"An inaugural tuna heralds good luck," commented the company president, a notable participant at the annual January sale.

Known as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is famous for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the successful bidder told the press that he was "taken aback at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price soared before you knew it."

This latest purchase tops his previous record purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously associated with exceptionally high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its eateries nationwide.

The high-energy energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly sliced up for diners at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.

"I feel like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," shared one elated customer.
